Tick Importance and transmission: The ticks of veterinary importance and the different routes of transmission, including transovarial, transtadial and intrastadial transmission are described. The identification of ticks up to species level is much more complicated and requires more expertise. The various genera of hard ticks can easily be differentiated by a set of features unique to each genus: mouthparts, basis capituli, scutum, eyes, festoons, adanal, subanal and accessory anal plates, coxae and anal groove. The identification of ticks is mainly based on morphological features although the hosts on which they occur, the locality where they were found and their seasonal activity is taken into consideration. Identification and differential diagnosis The study of the seasonal occurrence of ticks is of major importance in the control of ticks and tick-borne diseases. Most ticks show seasonality in their life cycles adult ticks will become active and feed at the start of the rainy season. In soft ticks or Argasidae, the mouthparts are recessed ventrally except in the larval stage. Hard ticks or Ixodidae are characterized by the presence of a hard scutum or shield and mouthparts projecting forward which makes them visible from the dorsal side. This “science immersion” provides students with an insight into how their samples are analyzed and contribute to an understanding of tick-borne disease risk in Indiana.There are three families of ticks although one family, Nuttallielidae comprises only one species. In the fall, qualifying applicants have the opportunity to participate in a “Day on Campus” where they meet the TickINsiders team, tour facilities, and see science in action. Participation in the workshop is not required in order to collect and send ticks to Purdue. Our educational workshops introduce students to the biology of Indiana ticks and common tick-borne diseases, and explore career paths in the fields of medical entomology, environmental science and public health. We also offer students a one-day spring workshop on the West Lafayette campus on tick identification, field collection techniques, and how to send ticks to Purdue for analysis. In 2019, we launched a new phase of Tick INsiders inviting Indiana residents to help us sample for ticks across all 92 Indiana counties. Help Tick INsiders Sample for Ticks in Indiana: 2021 Community Science Opportunities We use this information to develop detailed, region-specific disease-risk maps and educational materials for public health professionals. Ticks are analyzed at Purdue for hundreds of bacteria and viruses using a sequencing technique called “MiSeq”. Indiana High School Students tick collecting at Shades State Park (2018). We sample for three tick species considered vectors of disease – the Lyme disease tick, Ixodes scapularis, the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum. Our team of entomologists conducts sampling for ticks at State Parks and other locations around the state. Our challenge is to determine the range and incidence of tick vectors, and the pathogens circulating in Indiana’s tick populations. Our mission is to better understand the risks of tick-borne diseases across the state, and improve health care for Indiana’s residents. Tick “INsiders” is a community science project to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne diseases in Indiana.
